Liberty Recorder and the Edirol UA-1000

June 2, 2004

High Criteria announces support for the UA-1000 from Edirol for use with the Liberty Recorder. The UA-1000 connects to the computer via a USB 2.0 connection. It supports 8 line-level inputs or 4 mic inputs with XLR connections and associated pre-amps. The UA-1000 also has 8 outputs.

Further information on the UA-1000 may be obtained from Edirol at www.Edirol.com.

While the UA-1000 supports recording in both WAV (WDM) and ASIO mode, High Criteria recommends use of ASIO mode with the Liberty Recorder.

The UA-1000 requires Windows XP and Service Pack 1 to be installed on the computer. As of the writing of this document, the driver for the UA-1000 also requires the update of a separate Windows XP component, beyond the base XP release level. If you periodically update your Windows XP system, then you may have already installed this required update. To determine if the required update is already installed:

Update Confirmation

  • Change folder options to "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Using the Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder
Windows=>System32=>drivers and look for the file usbehci.sys. Right click on this file and choose Properties.
  • Click the Version tab and check the file version. The information should be something like 5.1.2600.1243. If the final portion of the number is 1243 or higher, then the system has already been updated. If the number is less than 1243, then you should install the required update, as described below.

Update Installation

The Windows update module KB822603 is included with the UA-1000 on a separate CD labelled "Windows XP Update CD-ROM". To install the update:

  • Insert the Windows XP Update CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
  • In the Explorer interface that will appear, select the .CMD file for the language (e.g. English CMD) that matches the language of Windows currently installed on the computer.
  • The Windows XP KB822603 Setup window will appear. Continue the install by clicking on the Next buttons, as they appear.
  • After the install is complete you should re-boot the PC and confirm the installation of the update by following the Update Confirmation procedure as outlined above.

At the time of this writing, the update is documented by Edirol on a pink announcement sheet included in the UA-1000 package. Please refer to the documentation that came with your UA-1000, prior to installing the device. Contact High Criteria or your Liberty sales representative, if you have any questions concerning the installation of the UA-1000 device.
